Council Member
John Grace is as Assistant City Attorney in Lubbock. He graduated from Trinity University in 1985 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Broadcasting & Film. He received his Juris Doctor in 1993 from St. Mary's University School of Law. He spent 8 years in private practice in San Antonio before moving to Lubbock in 2000. He spent nearly ten years in the Civil Division of the Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney's Office. In 2010, he moved to the Lubbock City Attorney's Office, and currently serves in the Litigation Section, with ancillary responsibility for the Police, Fire, Emergency Management and Civil Service departments.
He is the past President of the Lubbock Area Bar Association, past Chair of the Texas Bar College, past Chair of the Government Law Section, and a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He was named Boss of the Year in 2013 and 2022 by the Lubbock Legal Professionals Association. Since 2013, John has been rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell.
John speaks frequently to local and state bar organizations on a broad range of topics, but likes to focus on ways lawyers in the private sector can better interface with their government law counterparts. In 2018, he was given the Standing Ovation Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service by the staff of TexasBarCLE.
John has an amateur radio license and a federal firearms license. He collects old typewriters, antique ink wells, and likes to work on classic British sports cars. He has been married for more than 30 years to his wife, Jill. Their daughter, Chandler, recently graduated from their alma mater, Trinity University.
Following a contested primary, John is the Republican candidate for Judge of the 72nd District Court, serving Lubbock and Crosby Counties. He has no opponent in the November General Election and will take the bench in January, 2023.
